This is perhaps the most time consuming part of making money.
The Art of Adsense monetization is to think like the visitor and try to read his mind for each and every page or post you create. The generic adsense tools are not effective as they either do not fit in perfectly with the layout or do not relate with the content as they should(a factor of your content and positioning of the ad). As the reader reads the blog he must seamlessly transit from getting excited with the content to taking notice of a solution to his problem. Take a look at the following website:

The trick is to make the ads look like a continuation of the content and specific to the topic of the post. The ad must be seen as a solution to the problem being discussed and therefore placed carefully. There must also be other text in the content that has green hyperlinks. This must be done to show that hyperlinks are for more knowledge and distributed throughout the post – in the example above there are too few of these additional hyperlinks.
The down side of this page is that there are no obvious large google ads above and below the post. These distractors ads are to ‘camouflage’ the targeted ads that attempts to look like the content. The reader will think that he no longer to worry about clicking on ads. He should also narrow down the content wide to make the ad flush with the content.
To make reasonable returns on adsense, you must select topics which have adwords with high payout. Google has also improved over time to reduce the ad payout based on the traffic to the website. Low traffic means lower payout. How to improve traffic will be discussed at a later time. So the trick is not to put up your targeted adsense ads until you have a steady flow of traffic and until your content is ready.
To try adsense you will need to understand some aspects of html/javascript insertions. This can be quite discouraging initially but keep practicing and you will get use to it.
Some other quick tips:
a. 3 main locations. Top, middle and near the bottom.
b. Text are better then images
c. No borders or background color are better
d. 336 by 280 is the best paying size
e. Maximum of 3 adsense, 3 adlinks and 2 search boxes
