Step by Step 3c to Making Money Online (wordpress.org – self hosting)

Finally managed to make time from my busy schedule to continue with the step by step process for those absolutely new to internet and making money online.

Firstly wordpress.org and wordpress.com are largely free for basic purposes. The difference is wordpress.org is hosted on your selected hosting service provider who charges you an annual fee. With this self-hosting option what you gain is more control over your website in terms of theme customization. You can of course create unique sales pages separately and host then on the same server under the same domain name. You can create unique sign up pages for your product or services separate from wordpress but linkable to the main site. You also have a domain name that will not have wordpress in it. (You could also do that with wordpress.com but at cost). You also can easily adopt plugins that are regularly developed to make managing the website a breeze.

The plus side to wordpress.com is that it is free and you do not have to worry about spamming, security or backup. WordPress blogs also get additional traffic through promotions and tags. The down side is that there are limited 100+ themes to chose from and very little customization can be done. The link here will further compare wordpress.com to blogger as at 2010 – wordpress.com versus blogger.

The downside to wordpress.org is greater responsibility, more technical problems, spamming, and security issues.

Step A – Hosting Service

You should chose a hosting service that provides wordpress.org. All of them should have it as it is free but you never know. Compared to most website design software for which you could spend months trying to master, wordpress and blogger are user friendly and makes creating webpages and posts a breeze. It saves you the trouble of understanding how to link your pages to databases and applications.

For purposes of small business, this is probably the best arrangement.

Step B – Install wordpress.org

This is relatively straight forward and is usually found under software /services within your hosting control panel. For blue host wordpress application is found under simple scripts. Look around and it should be there.

Step C – Login and Theme Selection

I have researched substantially and found two free themes that are both flexible and customizable. My first choice is Atapualpa and my second choice is Suffusion. Of course for paid themes there is Genesis which is more versatile. The good thing about Atapualpa is that you can have upto 4 sidebars and they can be on anyside. The limitation is the limited widgets for heading and footer.

I would recommend that you try out atapualpa and suffusion for a while and decide what suits you best.

Step D Create  Categories, Pages and posts base on Step 2.

The good thing is that all the next few steps for wordpress.org is the same as those for wordpress.com.

So amend your very first post in the same way and then quickly create your pages with ot without content. Once you have the main post headings configured, you can now slowly start filling it up with content. It does not matter how many times you amend your content.

For the next few posts  I will share with you how to monetize, generate web traffic and use the social media to promote your website and product.
